J13018 Flight Lieutenant (No. 426 Thunderbird Squadron pilot) Douglas Dalton Shuttleworth DFC (b.1922) of Regina was KIA 19430818 and is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial near London, England, for airmen who died with no known grave. Shuttleworth's Lancaster was shot down over the rocket pens at Peenemunde, Germany. He was the son of Wesley Kenneth, a salesman for J.I. Case, and Alice Jane (McMorris) Shuttleworth. Douglas was born at Vancouver, British Columbia, attended Strathcona and Wetmore schools and Central collegiate and was working as a stockman at Simpson's when he enlisted at Regina in 1941. Shuttleworth's Distinguished Flying Cross was gazetted the day before he was killed. The citation: This officer has taken part in numerous sorties against varied targets in enemy territory and in several successful minelaying operations. He has attacked heavily defended targets in Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Mannheim and the Ruhr Valley. His determination to press home his missions has been amply illustrated by the photographs he has obtained. Flying Officer Shuttleworth's courage and fine fighting spirit have at all times been an inspiration to his squadron. KG Gawthrop and GC Robinson died on the same flight. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
