Narrative history
  V31768 Able Seaman (HMCS Valleyfield) David Henry (Dave) Giles (b.1924) of Hudson Bay was KIA when the Valleyfield was sunk by a U-boat 19440507 and is commemorated on the Halifax Memorial for servicemen lost or buried at sea. He was the son of Albert and Mary Giles. The family moved from Saltcoats to Hudson Bay in 1930 and Albert worked for the Saskatchewan Liquor Commission there. Dave was born at Bredenbury and was working for DNR as a driver's helper when he enlisted at HMCS Unicorn, Saskatoon, early in 1942. His brothers Thomas and Milton also served in the Navy, while brother Albert was in the Canadian Dental Corps.
