William Campbell, Corporal (12808) 5th Battalion, Canadian Infantry (Saskatchewan Regiment) was reported missing in action on 24 May 1915 and is listed on the Vimy Memorial, France.
William was born on 29 January 1887 in Stranraer, Wigtownshire, Scotland. He was the son of William and Jane (Wright) Campbell who ran the Caledonian Hotel in the town.
William was working as a decorator in Moose Jaw and was a member of the 27th Light Horse when he enlisted in September 1914 at Valcartier, Quebec (giving his year of birth as 1889). He was killed at Festubert during an attack on the German postions where the Battalion, already down to two effective companies, lost a further 5 Officers, 12 NCOs and 43 other ranks. He is remembered on the Stranraer war memorial and on a Wright family gravestone in Crossmichael parish churchyard.
After her husband’s death Jane, who was originally from Crossmichael, Kirkcudbrightshire, moved to Glenluce, Wigtownshire.
