Parkside District Roll of Honour

The Roll of Honour dedicated to those who served Empire and Country was compiled by the Parkside and District History Book Committee in the local history book, Reflections of the Past; History of Parkside and the Districts of Bygland, Cameo, Hilldrop, Honeywood, Ordale and Spruce Glen.

John Montgomery Speechly and Mathew Mair served in the Boer War (1899-1902).

For World War One (1914-1918), residents of the community came together to form two light horse troops, one training in Shellbrook and one in Parkside. The Parkside and District History Book Committee noted the names of all those who volunteered to enlist in the book. Those who gave the supreme sacrifice were George Wilbur Dobson, Elvin Larson, and Amos Sparks.

In World War Two (1939-1945), Kenneth Black, Stanley Buckingham, Samuel E (Ted) Clarke, George Elefson, David Osbourne (Dave) Olsvik, Leon Joseph Roberts, Edmund Schutte, Jake Jacobs Van De Veen were killed in action.

It is also noted that Clarke Lake was officially named in honour of F/Sgt Samuel E. Clarke near Lac La Ronge, and Roberts Lake was named in memory of F/O Leon J. Roberts, R.C.A.F.

The history book committee also mentioned those residents who served after the two great wars in military service. “Peace demands the most heroic labor and the most difficult sacrifice. It demands greater heroism than war. It demands greater fidelity to the truth and a much more perfect purity of conscience.” ~ Thomas Merton
