William Andrew Currie McKie, Private (782381) 28th Battalion, Canadian Infantry (Saskatchewan Regiment) was reported missing in action 21 August 1917 and is listed on the Vimy Memorial, France.

William was born on 27 December 1884 at Craigieside in the parish of New Abbey, Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland. He was the son of John and Janet (Ferguson) McKie.

Working in Moose Jaw as a teamster, he enlisted (giving his year of birth as 1880) in April 1916 at Moose Jaw. He was posted to the 128th Battalion but then transferred to the 28th Battalion. He was reported missing after an attack on the German trenches in the St. Laurent sector near Lens.

William is remembered on the New Abbey Parish War Memorial and on the family gravestone in New Abbey Cemetery.

Also remembered on both is his nephew, son of William’s sister Esther, William Fergusson McKie, Lance Corporal (22843) 6th Battalion, King’s Own Scottish Borderers who was killed in action almost a year later on 18 August 1918. He is buried in La Kruele Military Cemetery, Hazebrouk,France.
