In addition to the narrative on this memorial I would like to make the following additions:

  1. Hugh McKenzie took part in the Battle of Moreuil Wood, perhaps Flowerdew’s charge, which is where he received his wounds.
  2. Hugh was officially listed Missing In Action on 30/3/1918 with his unit, Lord Strathcona’s Horse (R.C.).
  3. The date of 2/4/1918 is the day he was admitted to “Lycée Jeanne Hachette”; otherwise known as Hospital Temporaire No 11.
  4. His unit were unaware of his whereabouts because he hadn’t been picked up by the British Field Ambulance (perhaps 7th CCFA). I have it on good authority that he was probably picked up by the French who relieved the Canadians and taken to Beauvais which was the drop off for the French wounded in that area. This would explain why it took 3 days to get to hospital.
  5. Hugh was officially pronounced Died of Wounds received in action on 16/6/1918 and his next-of-kin notified.
  6. Hugh’s father Alexander made several enquiries through April and May for news of his son.
