Narrative history
L800113 Gunner (Royal Canadian Horse Artillery) Norman William Carroll (b.1930) of Pennant, where he is buried, died 19501121. He was the son of Clive and Carrie Carroll. Norman was born at Cabri and was a truck driver when he enlisted at Regina in 1950.

Carroll perished in the Canoe River train wreck. A military train carrying troops destined for Korea collided head-on with a passenger train just east of Canoe River, British Columbia. Although no one was killed on the passenger train, several cars of the military train tumbled down an embankment killing 13, including Carroll along with AJ Atchison, RA Craig and LR Mooney. Interestingly, John Diefenbaker agreed to defend the CN telegrapher who was accused of negligence in not heading off the crash. The Chief secured his acquital and cemented his reputation as a defender of the little guy.
