J9653 Squadron Leader (No. 55 Squadron RAF pilot) Ronald Henry Stringer DFC (b.1919) of Willows was KIA 19450121 and is buried at Argenta Gap war cemetery, Ferrara, Italy. Stringer's Boston went down while he was attacking enemy road movements along Italy's east coast near Ferrara. He received his DFC in November 1943 for a daring daylight raid successfully completed under withering fire. Stringer originally enlisted in the South Saskatchewan Regiment. He was the son of George Ernest Albert and Margaret Alice (Milroy) Stringer who later retired to Ladysmith, British Columbia. George came from London, England, to homestead NE5-9-28-W2 east of Assiniboia in 1907. Ronald was born at Davyroyd and educated there and took his last year of high school at Vancouver. He was farming with his family when he enlisted at Regina in 1941. His brothers George Jr. and David both also served in the RCAF overseas. Distinguished Flying Cross citation (1943): This officer has completed a large number of sorties in the North African, Sicilian and Italian campaigns. In November 1943 he was detailed for a special daylight mission. In the face of withering anti-aircraft fire Flight Lieutenant Stringer made a steady and accurate run over the target at a low altitude, afterwards flying his damaged aircraft safely back to base. As leader of large formations this officer has displayed fine skill and initiative and has always shown the utmost enthusiasm for operational flying. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
