| J95481 Pilot Officer (No. 419 Moose Squadron RCAF bomb aimer) George Edward Smith (b.1923) of Winnipeg, Manitoba, was KIA 19441207 and is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial near London, England, for airmen from the north European theatre who died with no known grave. Smith's Lancaster was missing after a raid on Osnabruk, having encountered severe icing. He was the son of Henry Melvin, a CPR superintendent, and Catherine Pauline (Quinlan) Smith of Regina. George was born at Fort Macleod, Alberta, educated at Moose Jaw (St. Agnes school and Central collegiate) and was an apprentice machinist for the CPR at Winnipeg for a year before enlisting there in 1942. His brother Paul was a major with the Lake Superior Regiment overseas.
GR Cheesman died on the same flight. |
