| L12902 Private (South Saskatchewan Regiment) George Kenneth Smallwood (b.1918) of Stoughton died 19440722 and is buried at Bény-sur-Mer Canadian was cemetery near Reviers, Calvados, France. Smallwood, who survived the Dieppe raid, was wounded at Verrières Ridge and died two days later. He was the son of Albert Edmund and Agnes Mary Smallwood. George was working as a farm labourer at Sparling, Manitoba, when he enlisted at Weyburn in 1940.
George was attracted to the SSR by his brother (Frederick) Roy Smallwood who was a CSM in the regiment. Ironically, Roy was wounded in the same engagement that killed his younger brother. |
