Nordbye's Lancaster went missing during a night raid on Versailles. He was the son of Clarence and Beulah Mae (Crippen) Nordbye (Beulah remarried as Mrs. Ed Detta and moved to Silverton, British Columbia). Gordon was farming when he enlisted at Regina late in 1941.

Distinguished Flying Medal citation (posthumous):
Flight Sergeant Nordbye has participated in many sorties over enemy territory as mid-upper gunner. His skill and unwearying watch have contributed largely to the successes achieved by his crew. On one occasion when his aircraft was attacked by an enemy fighter this airman's accurate return fire caused the enemy fighter to break off the engagement. Throughout, Flight Sergeant Nordbye's courage and devotion to duty have been highly commendable.
