Narrative history
R176165 Flight Sergeant (No. 460 Squadron RAAF bomb aimer) Wilfred Bernard (Barney) Martin (b.1921) of Daylesford was KIA 19440504 during a raid on Mailly le Camp and is buried at Dommartin-Lettrée churchyard, Marne, France. According to the Daylesford local history, the pilot was able to manoeuvre his crippled aircraft to miss the tiny village of Dommartin-Lettrée, and the entire crew is buried there. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission wanted to move them following the war but the villagers petitioned to have them left there, where they are lovingly tended. He was the son of Thomas (of Orillia, Simcoe Co., Ontario) and Marie Therese (Doubenfeld) Martin who operated a hotel and store at Daylesford. Wilfred was born at St. Brieux and was helping in his parents store when he enlisted at Regina in 1941. His brothers Donald, Frank and Vincent were in the RCAF while Edward was in the Medical Corps and Lawrence served aboard HMCS Prince Robert.
