Narrative history |
| L9536 Private (South Saskatchewan Regiment) Harold Wilfred Mackie (b.1908) of Moose Jaw was KIA 19440720 at Verrières Ridge and is buried at Bretteville-sur-Laize Canadian war cemetery, Calvados, France. He was the son of Hannah Mackie of Chase, British Columbia. Harold had logged and fished on the west coast most of his life but had recently landed a labourer's job with the CPR when he enlisted at Moose Jaw in 1941. He had a rap sheet as long as your arm, including at least three civil convictions, and was undoubtedly a prime example of why Canadian troops were sometimes less than loved in the rural areas of Great Britain during their seemingly interminable training. But his file gives no indication that Mackie was anything but a brave soldier who died honourably. |
