| L602886 Rifleman (King's Own Rifles of Canada) William (Willie) Leibel (b.1920) of Denzil died 19440327 and is buried at Sacred Heart cemetery, Denzil. Leibel died in the RCAF hospital at Tofino, British Columbia, of a fractured skull suffered when a tracked vehicle overturned on the Tofino-Ucluelet road. He was the son of John and Elizabeth (Schafer) Leibel who came to 6-38-25-W3 in 1907 from the Odesa district of Ukraine. Interestingly, John was a veteran of the Russo-Japanese war of 1904-05. Willie was born at Unity and was farming with his family when he was called up for NRMA service at Regina early in 1942. |
