Narrative history
J42491 Flying Officer (No. 166 Squadron RAF pilot) Dennis Stuart Kemp (b.1921) of Prince Albert was KIA 19450215 over Chemnitz and is buried at Berlin 1939-45 war cemetery, Charlottenberg, Germany. Kemp was born at the Revillon Frères post at Red Earth northeast of Carrot River, and flew Lancasters. Dennis was working as an invoice clerk at the Burns Meats plant when he enlisted at Saskatoon in 1941. The carillon at St. Albans Anglican cathedral was dedicated to the memory of Dennis and 28 of his fellow parishioners.

He was the son of Harold Stuart Miller and Elsie (Lamb) Kemp who came from Lancashire, England. Harold joined the Hudson's Bay Co. in 1909, jumped to Revillon Frères, and served at virtually all of that company's posts in northern Saskatchewan over the years (Dennis spent his boyhood at Stanley Mission). The family moved to Prince Albert in 1927 for the sake of the kids' schooling, and Harold spent the rest of his career with Customs.

Harold Kemp had a photograph of Dennis as a boy on the shore of the lake that eventually came to bear his name. He knew the area well (he called it Makases Uske, mahkêsîs-askiy, "fox country", beyond the Vermilion(?) River).

According to Kemp, the Cree name for Kemp Lake is Chipwomisees, "little owl". There are two possible explanations for this name. ômisiw is a word for "owl", although it is more common in eastern Cree dialects. ômisîs is the diminutive form, and the prefix cîpw- would give "little pointed owl". Since the name is Woods Cree, the source could also be cîpwî-ômisîs (the diminutive of têpwê-ômisiw) meaning "little calling owl".
