Narrative history | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
R87296 Flight Sergeant (No. 207 Squadron RAF pilot) Harold Bjorn Einarson (b.1920) was KIA 19420910, and J17276 Flight Lieutenant (No. 61 Squadron RAF pilot) (Johann) Walter Einarson DFM DFC who was KIA 19440225 were twin brothers from Wynyard. Harold perished over Denmark early in the war, his Lancaster took off from RAF Station Syerston and was never heard from again. Walter's career lasted longer and he was awarded DFM and DFC, the latter for successfully piloting his damaged Lancaster back to England in late 1943. His luck ran out over Augsberg and he is buried at Choloy war cemetery, Meurthe-et-Moselle, France. Harold is among those commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial near London, England, for airmen from the north European theatre who died with no known grave. Both boys spent two yeas in the college of agriculture. Harold was working as a garage helper, Walter worked at the experimental farm at Indian Head for a year before the two travelled to Saskatoon to enlist together early in 1941. They were the sons of Haraldur Bjorn and Elin (Jackson) Einarson who were born in North Dakota and Iceland respectively. They homesteaded NW28-32-12-W2 in the Kristnes district northwest of Foam Lake, later moving to a farm near Wynyard. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
