L12710 Private (South Saskatchewan Regiment) Sam Richard Chermishnuk (b.1917) of Maple Creek died 19440810 of wounds incurred two days earlier and is buried at Bény-sur-Mer Canadian war cemetery near Reviers, Calvados, France. Chermishnuk was wounded at Rocquancourt in Operation Totalize during the push to Falaise and died the next day. He was the son of Onescu (Jerry) and Anna (Reznechenko) Cheremishniuk who came from Kherson oblast, Ukraine, via the United States to homestead SE1-11-28-W3 in the Mackay Creek district west of Maple Creek. am was farming with his family when he enlsted at Weyburn in 1940. Two of his brothers also served, Gus and Dan, the latter in the airborne division. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||

Geo-memorial details | East of Maribelli Lake north of Creighton. Sam's family had proposed that the bridge over the Mackay Creek ¼ mile north of the school and bordering their farm be named Chermishnuk's Crossing in his honour. The chief geographer chose a lake instead. | |||||||||||||||||||||||
