Alexander Adair, Private (217096) 1st Canadian Mounted Rifles was reported missing in action on 25 October 1917 and is listed on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
Alexander was born on 13 September 1886 in Kirkcowan, Wigtownshire, Scotland. He was the son of Thomas and Jane (Adams) Adair who lived latterly in Crossmichael Parish, Kirkcudbriightshire.
Alexander was a carpenter living in Melfort, Saskatchewan and with two brothers, Thomas and William, and was a member of the militia regiment, the 100th Winnipeg Grenadiers. He enlisted in July 1916 at Camp Hughes, Manitoba.
On 25 October 1917, the 1st Battalion were in the front line trenches and came under heavy shelling as they tried to support and attack by the 4th Battalion, Canadian Mounted Rifles.
His brothers Thomas and William and two more brothers, David and James who served with the Royal Field Artillery of the British Army, all served on the Western Front.
Alexander is remembered on the Crossmichael Parish War Memorial and on a Roll of Honour in Crossmichael Parish Church.
