Narrative history
R139598 Leading Aircraftman (RCAF) Archie Walker Jones (b.1894) of Invermay was KIA 19421014 and is commemorated on the Ottawa Memorial for airmen from the North American theatre who died with no known grave. He was the son of Joe and Maggie Jones who came from Balsam, Durham Co., Ontario, to homestead SW25-32-9-W2 just to the south of Invermay. Archie, who was a gunner with the 214th Battalion at Vimy Ridge during World War I, had his own farm between the wars. He enlisted at Saskatoon late in 1941 and was posted to Gander, Newfoundland. He was on his way home on leave but was lost at sea when a German U-boat sank the ferry Caribou between Port aux Basques and North Sydney, Nova Scotia. Archie left six children who subsequently moved with his wife Marietta (Bull) and mother to Port Hammond, British Columbia.
