Narrative history
V10368 Able Seaman (HMCS Raccoon) John Edward Cherpeta (b.1922) of Regina was KIA 19420907 and is commemorated on the Halifax Memorial for servicemen lost or buried at sea. He was the son of Alex and Anne Cherpeta. John was born at Sturgis and was working at the Metropolitan theatre when he enlisted at Regina in 1940.

The Raccoon was built as the private yacht Holonia in Maine in 1931. She was one of a number of such vessels purchased by the Canadian government in 1940 and pressed into service as anti-submarine patrollers and convoy escorts pending the arrival of properly equipped naval vessels. HMCS Raccoon was on convoy escort in the St. Lawrence River off the Gaspé Peninsula when she was hit - and instantly obliterated - by two torpedoes from U165. All 37 hands were lost including Cherpeta and AJ Payne.
