Narrative history
4097063 Private (16th Battalion, Manitoba Regiment) James Smith (b.1886) of Saskatoon was KIA 19181001 east of Sancourt and is commemorated on the Vimy Memorial north of Arras, Pas-de-Calais, for the 11,000+ Canadian soldiers who perished in northern France with no known grave. He was the son of William and Emily Whistlecraft of Rickinghall, Suffolk, England. James was a lumberjack when he was drafted early in 1918.

This man was apparently born John Whistlecraft, and that is the way he appears in CVWM, but he signed his attestation as James Smith.
