Narrative history | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
19682 Private (10th Battalion, Alberta Regiment) James W. Arthurs (b.1880) of Wapella was KIA 19150426 and is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial at Ieper, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium, which bears the names of 55,000 men who were lost without trace during the defence of the Ypres Salient in the First World War. James was a native of Dungannon, Tyrone, Ireland, and served for eight years in the Royal Irish Artillery before coming to Canada. He was working as a labourer when he enlisted at Winnipeg, Manitoba, on the outbreak of the war. James' only surviving relative was the infant son of his deceased half sister at Dungannon. Note that his year of birth is given as 1880 on his attestation but other evidence in his file indicates that he was probably born in 1887 or 1888. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
